Following the success of the Written Declaration on the European Emergency Number 112 sponsored by a cross-party coalition consisting of Vice Presidents Diana WALLIS (ALDE, UK), Gérard ONESTA (Greens/EFA, FR), Alejo VIDAL-QUADRAS (EPP-ED, ES), Dimitrios PAPADIMOULIS (GUE/NGL, GR) and former MEP Marc TARABELLA and adopted by 530 Members of the European Parliament, the first European 112 Day is organised on 11 February 2008 with the aims of making sure that Europeans are informed on the European emergency number 112 and that calls to this number need to be appropriately handled.

Press Conference at the European Parliament in Brussels

A this occasion, a Press Conference will be held at the European Parliament in Brussels with the participation of 4 Members of the European Parliament and several representatives of the European Commission with the aim of:

  • Informing Europeans on the use of 112
  • Developing new ways of informing and educating Europeans to the 112
  • Presenting a strategy to make sure that calls to 112 are appropriately handled
  • Providing input to the revision of the Telecom Package

Other Information Campaigns and Press Actions in Europe

During the First European 112 Day, several informations campaigns and press actions will take place.

  • 112 Information Campaign in Brussels National Airport, Belgium

At Brussels Airport, hostesses will raise awareness around the 112 as single emergency number around Europe. Travellers receive their picture immediately as well as a 112 sticker that they can stick on their mobile phone. In the evening, all pictures are available on www.112day.eu Travellers can send their pictures as e-cards to travel friends, and hereby raise awareness by themselves.

  • First European 112 Day in Stuttgart, Germany

With the cooperation of 6 emergency organisations, the City of Stuttgart and the European Information Office, an information campaign on 112 will take place in Stuttgart from 11am to 4 pm.

  • European 112 Day in Romania

The Romanian emergency services will organise an information campaign all over the country.

Besides, MEP Adina-Iona Valean has organised a 112 Roundtable at the National Parliament in Bucharest gathering all the stakeholders of the implementation of 112

  • European 112 Day in Bulgaria

While Bulgaria is implementing the European Emergency Number 112, MEP Dushana Zdravakova will participate to raise awareness on the issue on 11 February 2008.

  • 112 Day in Finland

In Finland will be organised 11 February 2008 the 112 Day as it has been organised for several years already. The objective of the 112 day in Finland is to promote the knowledge and use of the number 112.
