EENA Advisory gathers already more than 30 major stakeholders!

Following major political successes such as the endorsement by a very large majority of the European Parliament of the Written Declaration on the European Emergency Number 112 and the Written Declaration on Early Warning Systems, EENA has set up an Advisory Board in order to gather the main emergency telecommunications stakeholders which include politicians, professional users associations, international organisations and associations as well as solution providers.

We are glad to announce the composition of EENA Advisory Board to our 112 Newsletter readers:

Launch of the 112 Foundation

The 112 Foundation is being created to promote the knowledge and appropriate use of the European emergency number 112. The Foundation was proposed  by EENA in cooperation with its Advisory Board. The 112 Foundation will help fund additional public promotion and education of the already EU-wide available 112 number to reach emergency services in times of need.

As incredible as it may seem, the 112 does not yet have its own common logo and graphic line in the EU. The first milestone will therefore be to develop one common graphic line and logo. This will serve as the basic material for a high-quality educational program about the 112 that will be translated in all EU official languages and made accessible to all, including people with disabilities.

The 112 Foundation will help fund the creation of a set of promotional/educational materials such as posters, stickers, children books, videos and audio recordings, video games, songs. These materials will inform on the appropriate use of the 112 - When to call and What to Say - along with messages on the damages of hoax calls. Materials will be downloadable online for free and open to customization by any "multiplier" organisation and individual willing to inform citizens on the 112, in particular children and mobile Europeans - students, workers and tourists.

Roundtable on 112 in Poland

EENA will soon coorganise on November 3, 2008 a roundtable on 112 in Poland in collaboration with the Polish Ministry of Interior and Member of the European Parliament Jacek Saryusz-Wolski.

The objetive of the Roundtable on 112 is to:

  • Provide Polish authorities with a roadmap on how to best tackle the problems and challenges related to the implementation and functioning of the European emergencyn number 112 in Poland
  • Stimulate exchange of experiences and best practices between Polish and EU/international experts in the field
  • Allow all Polish stakeholders to speak up their position and to engage a real dialogue

The debate will allow Polish stakeholders to discuss some issues with benefiting from best practices from Europe and international experience. Updates on regulatory and framework and existing technological solutions will be presented. The participation of politicians will also enable collaboration for future initiatives. We believe that the roundtable will pave the way to further actions promoting the 112 and the tools for its efficient use.

If you are willing to participate to this event or receive more information, please contact Gary Machado at gm@eena.org

Please note that 112 Roundtables will be organised in several other countries (dates under discussion).

EU Telecom Package reform

EENA is delighted to annouce that the European Parliament committees in charge of the reform of "Telecom Package" have shown strong support for EENA Advisory Board amendments and the 112 issue. Even though consolidated reports are not yet available and the texts will be voted in the plenary, it appears that Committees in charge have shown support to EENA advocacy:

  • More efforts on information and education on the use of 112 will be done
  • The 112 should be made accessible from the entire national territories
  • Member States will have to make sure that caller-location is implemented
  • Access to emergency services through 112 may be blocked in case of repeated misuse by the user
  • The 112 should be more accessible to people with disabilities
  • The interoperability of communications between emergency services

However, some other issues have not yet fully been considered and EENA will continue advocating them:

  • The need for the establishment of an early warning system for citizens; and
  • The need to develop commonly agreed quality standards at the EU level
