European Emergency Number Association - EENA 112

The European endorses by a historical majority a text on the European emergency number 112

Last week, the 112 reached in Strasbourg its greatest success ever following the endorsement by 530 Members of the European Parliament (largest majority ever for this procedure) of the Written Declaration on the European Emergency Number 112.

MEPs from all political backgrounds and all Member States united to ask the Commission and the Member States to conduct a pan-European evaluation of the services providing when dialling 112 as well as to effectively publicise the number (still unknown for 2/3 of Europeans). This has now become an official text of the European Parliament, therefore enhancing the support for this major tool of European Citizens' safety.

The video available below relates the announcement by the President of the European Parliament, Mr. Hans-Gert Pöttering, of the success of the initiative.

You can be assured that EENA, through this strong political support, will make sure that the voice of the European Parliament and European Citizens is heard at the Commission and the Member States. The first step is the meeting that will be held on September 25th between Commissioner Viviane Reding and the EP Vice Presidents Diana Wallis, Alejo Vidal Quadras and Gérard Onesta as well as MEP Dimitrios Papadimoulis to "take stock of the situation, and to discuss future actions to undertake". Such a support entitles us to say that the 112 is now entering a new era!

We want to thank all of you who, through different means, made of EENA the most politically influential citizen driven association in matters related to citizens' safety in Europe and, most importantly, helped us in improving the European emergency number 112.

EENA's involvement in efficient Alert Systems to the populations through the CHORIST Project

Since June 2006, EENA is involved in the Project CHORIST, a European Commission funded research project in which the main objective is to develop a system made up of the following subsystems:

  • A fully integrated, reliable and performing alert chain delivering alerts to authorities with inputs from heterogeneous sensors, disparate agencies and citizens;
  • Heterogeneous communication means (radio, TV, sirens, GSM) to dispatch messages from authorities to as many citizens as possible within the crisis area and with limited delay;
  • Secured, rapidly deployable and interoperable voice and high data-rate telecommunication systems (incl. ad-hoc networks) for in the field risk response teams.

An excellent 112 initiative: The 6 Minutes Campaign in Netherlands

The Netherlands Heart Foundation launched a massive campaign on 112, showing that an efficient use of this number and a quick intervention within 6 minutes would raise the survival rate of citizens victim of a heart attack from 5-10% to 50-70%! EENA is convinced that this kind of important national initiative will make Europeans understand the need for proper emergency response through 112.

Update on the 112 Video Project

The 112 VIDEO project is getting traction across Europe. After a great success in Portugal on different presentations to the government, Nuno Carvalho, the founder of the 112 VIDEO project, is now pushing the technology into Spain, France and Belgium.

Upcoming event

An emergency services workshop will be organised on October 30th - November 1st 2007 in Brussels.
