The EU-112 Event

The EENA was delighted to welcome 500 representatives from emergency services, public authorities and industries (24 countries represented) during the EU 112 event that was held on 25 and 26 March 2010 in Murcia, Spain. The aim of the workshop was to foster sharing of best practices between these "112" stakeholders. The event was organised under the patronage of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union. Attendees got acquainted with new information and ideas that can help to foster the improvement of the 112 service. The EENA would like to thank the conference's sponsors for their contributions without which it would be impossible to organise such a gathering. Last but not least, the partner organisers from the General Directorate for Emergencies of the Region of Murcia have done a tremendous work in organising the conference and the street fair: they deserve all our recognition for dedicating so much energy and efforts!

The 112 Operations Committee

The committee was created by EENA in early 2010 and aims at creating a set of recommendations (requirements and performance indicators) that could serve as guidelines for EU emergency services and relevant authorities. During the first semester of this year, the committee is reviewing the different 112 models in Europe and international emergency services operational documents (e.g. NENA documents). Representatives from European countries attend regular conference calls and present their national 112 systems. The presentations respond to a series of questions and guidelines prepared by the Committee Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary. As from the second half of 2010, the Committee will start to work on defining requirements and performance indicators.

112 Summer Campaign

Every year, about 150 million Europeans are crossing borders within the European Union for leisure or business. However, 75% of Europeans do not know about the 112 while 90% of citizens agree on the importance of a common emergency number in Europe. Summer holidays are a crucial period and all travellers should be aware about 112, therefore the 112 Foundation invites camping sites, youth hostels and hotels to promote 112 during summer. Companies are also welcome to inform their employees before summer holidays. All these organisations can use posters, stickers and other information material provided by the 112 Foundation.

The 112 Foundation can help you to build a 112 information campaign in your country. Please find below information materials and ideas to promote 112.

112 Survey in Morocco

European citizens travel extensively to North African countries. While travelling outside the EU, a common emergency number could help getting easier access to emergency services. In order to know if Moroccan citizens were satisfied with the quality of emergency services in their country, EENA conducted a survey to evaluate their level of satisfaction and their knowledge about emergency services in Morocco. They were also questioned on their willingness to have access to the 112 European Emergency number in Morocco in addition to the national Moroccan emergency numbers.

The NG112 Committee

The EENA Next Generation 112 Technical Committee is chaired by Hannes Tschofenig (former Chair of IETF-ECRIT) and vice-chaired by Roger Hixson (NENA Technical Issues Director). Several activities on how to support IP-based emergency calls towards legacy PSAPs are being undertaken. To avoid highly customised solutions within each Member State of the EU, it was proposed to start a technical group within EENA to synchronise various activities by considering the country-specific circumstances regarding their current emergency infrastructure. A forum with experts in technical that offers room for discussions on IP-based emergency systems will help Europe to move closer to the high-quality 1-1-2 vision.
