EENA & the EU

EENA has been actively working to promote the idea of a better known, efficient and transparent 112 service chain throughout the European Union by advocating action at Eu and national level. Since 2003 EENA has been introducing complaints and petitions with the European Commission, the European Ombudsman and the European Parliament to help them understand the importance of the 112 for European Citizens. Following a petition to the European Parliament in 2006, several MEPs have been working in close collaboration with the EENA to improve the knowledge and the efficiency of the 112 within the EU. In 2007 and 2008, 2 Written Declarations were adopted with the support of the EENA. The Written Declaration on the European emergency number 112 stills holds the record of signatures (530).

EENA is petitioning the European Parliament

On the 14th anniversary of the Council Decision regarding the single European emergency number 112, EENA introduced a petition to the European Parliament in July 2005.

Specific actions in collaboration with Members of the European Parliament

  • October 2004, the MEP Frédérique RIES and Gérard DEPREZ managed to introduce a specific comment on the European Budget dedicated to the 112.
  • September 2004, EENA in collaboration with the MEP Frédérique RIES launched an information campaign amongst all the MEP, all the new Commissioners and all the Directorate General of the European Commission.

As announced during the conclusions of the 112 conference and exhibition in December 2004, EENA has been strengthening the actions at the European Parliament and we are happy to include here some first results...EENA thanks the MEPs committed to a better 112 for the Citizens.

Ari Vatanen, raporteur on on the European Road Safety Action Programme: Halving the number of road accident victims in the European Union by 2010: A shared responsibility.

"Regrets the fact that the common emergency number 112 is not known to all Europeans;
calls on the Commission and the Member States to evaluate current awareness of the
single European emergency call number on the part of the European public and the quality
of the services provided to citizens in distress via this number; invites the Commission
and the Member States to propose measures based on that evaluation to improve the
situation in the European Union
"

Luís Queiro, raporteur on new prospects and new challenges for sustainable European tourism report

"Calls on the Commission to work with the Member States to improve the operation and awareness of the European emergency number 112 for the benefit of all citizens but in particular for tourists, having regard to the linguistic, technical and rapid response aspects of providing the 112 services"
